In a decisive move, House Speaker Joe Tate, a Democrat, took action against Michigan State Representative Josh Schriver, a Republican, following the dissemination of a racist ideology on social media.

Condemnation of Racist Post and Removal of Responsibilities:

Schriver, who represents parts of Oakland and Macomb counties, faced repercussions after sharing a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

The post featured a map depicting a disproportionate number of Black figures compared to white figures, accompanied by the phrase “The great replacement,” perpetuating a baseless conspiracy theory aimed at diminishing the influence of white individuals.

House Speaker’s Response and Consequences:

House Speaker Tate, an African American, denounced the racist, hateful, and bigoted speech, emphasizing his commitment to upholding a safe and inclusive environment within the House.

Due to his actions, Schriver was stripped of his committee assignment and staff members, with the House Business Office now overseeing his constituent services.

Schriver’s Defiance and Reactions:

Despite facing criticism for his social media posts, Schriver remained defiant, defending his actions as opposition to racism and victim politics.

However, his remarks failed to mitigate the severity of his actions, as Tate highlighted Schriver’s history of promoting debunked theories and dangerous rhetoric.

Political Fallout and Governor’s Response:

Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, condemned Schriver’s post as “abhorrent rhetoric,” emphasizing the state’s commitment to unity and denouncing efforts to sow racial division.

Schriver, elected to a two-year term in 2022, faces significant backlash for his actions, underscoring the broader societal repercussions of promoting hate speech and divisive ideologies.
